North Raleigh residents love where they live for the friendly neighborhoods, numerous housing choices, greenways, convenient access to the Raleigh-Durham International (RDU) airport, Research Triangle Park (RTP), downtown Raleigh, grocery stores, home improvement centers and shopping! Since the Northern 540 loop was built, commuters save time traveling to work in RTP, Durham and can be anywhere they need to be in North Raleigh in about 10- 15 minutes.
When you turn off Capital Boulevard and head west, you may find yourself on Six Forks Rd, Falls of Neuse, Millbrook Rd, or Creedmoor Roads. Notice how these roads curve and meander around quiet neighborhoods, vibrant shopping centers, community parks and other recreational centers. Everything is convenient, but here in North Raleigh you feel like you’re steps from the country. Nature is right outside your window and there are plenty of parks and greenways to make sure your dog or kids tire out before bedtime! There are many proven public and private schools to choose from if you are moving with school age children.
Many North Raleigh residents are also members of the A.E. Finley YMCA where both kids and parents can exercise and play throughout the year. This Y features summer camps, Track Out programs and afterschool care so working parents have options for care.
If you want to leave the car behind and gather with friends and co-workers—venture to North Hills within the heart of Raleigh’s Midtown. Thanks to wise planning, North Hills is the premier mixed-use destination in North Raleigh with apartments, single family homes, a grocery store, shopping, restaurants, a movie theater, a Target, a farmer’s market and even three Starbucks. In addition to North Hills, Lafayette Village off of Falls of Neuse also features boutique shopping, various restaurants and wine shops, as well as monthly events and festivals.
If you've flown into Raleigh-Durham International (RDU) airport, and have headed to Raleigh, you've traveled through Northwest Raleigh, the gateway to North Carolina’s capital city. Glenwood Avenue is a main thoroughfare. From one end of Glenwood, you can spend a day at Brier Creek Shopping Center with its movie theater, big box stores, restaurants and shops and 15 minutes later you can park at Crabtree Valley Mall, one of Raleigh’s most popular shopping destinations anchored by Belk, Macy’s, Sears, and Dillard’s.
William B. Umstead State Park is right off Glenwood Avenue featuring hiking, mountain biking and even trails for horses. Umstead Forest is so convenient to North Raleigh and RTP that many people make quick trips to the park for a mid-day runs and trail rides.
In many neighborhoods along Creedmoor Road, you’ll find mature trees and lots with land, five minutes from Crabtree Valley Mall and 15-20 minutes from downtown Raleigh. Creedmoor Road is also conveniently located to 540, where you’re minutes from pretty much anywhere in Wake County.
Many new residents first move to Northwest Raleigh, thinking that it is not only close to their jobs in RTP, it may also be close to their spouse’s future job. Northwest Raleigh is also minutes away from other Wake County towns such as Cary, Apex, and Morrisville. This area of town is also home to Rex Hospital, one of Raleigh’s largest employers featuring a top notch cardiology and vascular surgery center.
Close to Rex Hospital on Blue Ridge Road is the North Carolina Museum of Art, a free museum that hosts multiple exhibitions throughout the year. Past exhibits include Monet, Rodin, Norman Rockwell, Toulouse Lautrec, Rembrandt and more of the art world’s greats. Five minutes away is the North Carolina Fairgrounds, where the NC State Fair takes place for 10 days every October.
